Program Description:

Trevi Fountain, Rome

Rome, Italy

As the capital of Italy and its largest city (2.8 million; 3.7 million in metro area), Rome combines a rich cultural heritage with the fast pace of a major metropolitan area. Breathtaking monuments appear around every corner, making it no surprise that Rome continues to be a favorite destination for students, tourists and religious pilgrims alike. Innumerable social, political, and cultural events provide constant opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the local way of life and truly "do as the Romans do".

Lorenzo De'Medici Institute - Rome Campus

While the original LDM campus was established in Florence in 1973, the Rome campus was just opened in 2007. Located in the heart of the city just minutes from the Trevi Fountain and the Presidential Palace (Piazza del Quirinale), the Rome campus combines modern facilities with historic surroundings.  All courses, other than Italian language, are conducted in English.

While at LDM Rome, students have the support of a LDM adviser. She conducts orientation, arranges housing assignments, assists in registering students for courses and is available to help students with any academic or personal issues or concerns. In such a close-knit community, students will also get to know other LDM faculty and staff.

All Students at LdM are able to choose for a wide array of courses in Italian language, studio arts, art history, business, and the humanities. Class sizes are small and attendance is mandatory. The faculty at LdM is primarily Italian but there is also a significant number of professors from other countries. The classroom experience combines interactive, discussion-based instruction with traditional European expectations of student ownership of the learning process. Assessment may include mid-term and final examinations as well as on-going written assignments and oral presentations.

Summer LDM students have several choices when it comes to academics.  They can choose the following options: 3-credit elective, a 3-credit Italian language course, a 3-credit elective plus a 3 or 4-credit Italian language course, or two 3-credit electives.  Summer LDM students also have the option of taking non-credit courses in cooking or wine-tasting for an additional cost.

Accommodations and Meals

Students will live in a shared, furnished apartment within a short walk or bus ride from the school. Students share double bedrooms and each apartment has from 2-4 bedrooms. Apartments are modest and they all have similar facilities, but no two are alike. Towels, bed linens, and basic kitchen necessities are provided. Students are not on a meal plan and are expected to cook for themselves in the apartments.
