Fact Sheet:
Program Type: Faculty-led Program Advisor: Natalie Schlegel
Program Description:

The Cronin Office of International Education seeks proposals from full-time faculty to lead an international course in the 2023-24 academic year. We encourage course proposals from all disciplines, for graduate or undergraduate students. We especially encourage:
  • proposals from business departments
  • graduate course proposals
  • undergraduate international service learning (ISL) course proposals. The BSLCE is a resource to assist faculty to develop ISL courses.
We are now accepting proposals for international courses to be offered in the following terms:
  • Winter break in January 2024
  • Spring break in March 2024
  • Summer break in May 2024 after exams
International course proposals must demonstrate strong alignment of course content with destination and activities, and strong emphasis on hands-on learning and guided reflection.

Faculty have the option of working with a program provider who can assist with customizing itineraries, facilitating logistics, and making travel arrangements in order to support the academic objectives. While working with a provider is not required, we recommend considering it given the unique circumstances brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. We can recommend a network of providers. We are available to assist interested faculty with proposal preparation. Please review the Proposal Guidelines and contact Director of Study Abroad, Sandonei Chiodini to arrange a meeting.

PROPOSAL PROCESS FOR JANUARY 2024, MARCH 2024, OR MAY 2024 FACULTY-LED INTERNATIONAL COURSES/GBEs

Step 1: To propose a course submit the online proposal form via this system- which includes a complete syllabus and draft itinerary by May 30, 2023.

Interested faculty should communicate their interest to the chair of their department in advance of the proposal deadline.

*Returning faculty leaders must also submit the online proposal form. Please focus on the question about changes to the course from previous years. Other responses can be brief and can be copied and pasted from previous years’ proposals.

Step 2: Faculty-Led International Courses Committee Review and Curriculum Implementation Committee Review

Faculty-Led International Courses Committee review (all courses): This committee looks for alignment between course content and the selected destination, an emphasis on experiential on-site learning and reflection, itinerary and budget feasibility, and consideration of health and safety concerns. All courses are reviewed in terms of resource implications.

Curriculum Implementation Committee Review (new courses, to be completed if accepted): The committee will evaluate the syllabus like any other on-campus course, considering specific learning objectives, required readings, deliverables, evaluation methods, etc.

In the event that the committee receives more high quality proposals than it can populate in a given cycle, a rotation system may be used. The criteria for such a rotation will be the creation of an annual menu of courses that is diverse in destination and subject matter.

Preliminary approvals will be announced no later than June 15, 2023.

Step 3: Submit itinerary, budget, and revised syllabus by July 30, 2023.

Approved faculty must submit a detailed itinerary and budget, and make any necessary revisions to the syllabus. The Office of International Education can provide a budget template and sample syllabi upon request.

The Faculty-Led International Course Review Committee conducts final review and notifies faculty of course approvals by late mid-August.  Faculty leaders must wait for formal course approval before promoting the course to students.
